Got Transparency?
Open Meeting and Public Records Talks Across the State

The Transparency Tour began in the fall of 2011 after Jim Condos was first elected secretary of state.

“It was clear to me that there was a general lack of information on open meeting and public records law available to the public. It’s great that the statutes are accessible online, but the statutes often leave room for interpretation, which can make it particularly difficult to understand and intimidating for a newcomer,” says Secretary Condos.

Originally planned as a one-time tour of the state, Secretary Condos decided to expand the tour to a biennial event which covers ten to twelve stops across Vermont and generally takes place in the autumn of a non-election year.

The presentation, which covers both open meeting and public records laws, lasts approximately two hours—with ample time for questions.

“I find that the presentation works best when the audience participates. Often I am in a community because they have questions so participation is key!” Secretary Condos adds that, “The presentation is geared towards everyone—local municipal officials and to constituents looking to get involved—it’s about transparency, accountability, and accessibility.”

While the official tour is biennial, Secretary Condos offers to come to any community that has questions at all times of the year. To schedule a presentation, please email our office.

Voter Registration and Civics Education

Secretary Condos and the Elections division are glad to attend school voter registration drives and give educational talks on civic engagement, how local government works, and the legislative process. These talks can be targeted for school children of all ages. It is never too early to become an informed and engaged Vermonter!
